The Orchard is set on the edge of the picturesque village of Chirbury, this development delivers much-needed affordable housing in a rural setting.
Powis Estates owns the former orchard site and leases it to Shropshire Rural Housing Association.
The project creates a sustainable, high-quality residential community that blends with the local landscape.
The development includes 13 affordable homes in Phase One. These homes form a cohesive addition to the village, combining traditional architecture with modern construction methods.
Sustainability and Community
The Orchard enhances biodiversity and site ecology. Wildlife corridors along the boundaries and retained landscaping provide natural buffers and habitat connections.
The site layout improves access to local amenities and safer pedestrian routes, enhancing road safety and encouraging active travel for residents.
Design and Construction
Ellis Hillman Architects (EHA) updated and refined the previous Phase One design to meet planning approval and modern sustainability standards.
SJ Roberts Construction Ltd built the homes using timber frame, while red brick, render, and rumbled limestone complement the surrounding village architecture. Design details, including brick quoins and arched rowlock window heads, reflect the local vernacular.
Each home exceeds regulatory U-values, offers improved airtightness, and uses Grant Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) for low-carbon heating.
Recognition
We proudly report that The Orchard has reached the shortlist for the 2025 CIH Housing Awards – Best Affordable Housing Development (£0–£5m). This award highlights the project’s quality, sustainability, and value to the community.
