Lowfield Timber Frames worked on this project with Telford and Wrekin Borough Council to achieve the requirements of Passivhaus Standards on the new Telford Visitor Centre building, a part of the new Southwater development.

Utilising a 142mm Kingspan TEK wall envelope system, an additional insulation layer of Kingspan (TW55) was specified at 60mm thick to further reduce the already low u-value of the wall system down to 0.10W/m2k. The additional insulation layer also further reduced thermal bridging and created a thermal link into the foundation system. This was held in place externally with a timber batten and a specified screw which in turn carried the timber external facade system.

A Glulam Portal Frame package was designed, engineered, machined in house to create the required amount of stability for the clear open rooms required as a part of the design concept. Along with the Glulam package, all specialist galvanised metal connectors, flitchplates and base plates were manufactured in house in our Steel Fabricating shop.

The Kingspan Unidek Aero 240-7 SIPS roof system was specified, supplied and installed by Lowfield Timber Frames with zero thermal bridging whilst creating a u value for the roof assembly of 0.14W/m2k.

Lowfield Timber Frames completed the installation of the TEK, Glulam and Unidek structure in a period of 4 working weeks.

Crowborough Community Centre

 Glulam Portal Frame Structure

This highly complex design and build contract in Crowborough, East Sussex required a large complex Glulam Portal Frame structure engineering to create an 18.6 Mtr clear internal span and to form the modern buildings shape.

The project was then clad externally with the 142mm Kingspan TEK Building System SIPS panel. The 142mm SIP provided stability over the glulam structure when fixed in place with a specialist fixing and in addition also provided an insulated and airtight layer in one simple installation.

Fitted over the SIPS system was a layer of Kingspan Nilvent breather membrane prior to installtion of the external cladding system by the main contractor. Our standard breather membrane was left insitu over all glulam components to provide some weather protection prior to installation of the SIPS cladding.

Excluding the Main Curved Portal Frames which were brought in from Europe, Lowfield Timber Frames processed all of the remaining glulam components in house which was approximatly 100 complex glulam purlin and hip beams

This project was completed within the agreed 12 week build programme in 2011.

Glulam Portal Frame Structure

Another large Glulam Portal Framed building by Lowfield Timber Frames Ltd, clad externally using the KingspanTEK Building System. The scheme incorportaed a number of deifferent internal wall designs using our traditional timber frame system to cary a number of accoustic wall finishes and insulated assemblies as required to achieve teh specific accoustic performance in each specific room.

Project comprised of the following specification

  • 22mtr Glulam Portal frames and beams
  • Galvanised connections and post bases.
  • 240 x 45mm C24 Timber (KVH) Finger Jointed roof rafters in up to 13 mtr lengths.
  • 18mm CDX Good one side roof decking
  • 142mm Kingspan TEK Building envelope

This complex shaped project was erected in just under 8 working weeks during 2010.
